What is ADHD?
ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, task management, and impulse control. It often begins in childhood and may continue into adulthood. ADHD is characterised by symptoms in three key areas:
- •Inattention: Difficulty staying focused, organizing tasks, following through on instructions, or paying attention to details. People with ADHD may appear forgetful or easily distracted.
- •Hyperactivity: A tendency to move excessively or feel restless, such as fidgeting, tapping, or having difficulty sitting still. This is more common in children, and can also manifest in adults as inner restlessness.
- •Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting others, or struggling to wait their turn. Impulsivity can lead to challenges in decision-making and self-control.
ADHD often affects multiple areas of life, including school, university, work, relationships, and daily functioning. Its impact can vary in severity and presentation, with some individuals primarily showing inattentive symptoms, others primarily hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, and many experiencing a combination of both.
It is a treatable condition, typically managed through a combination of therapy, lifestyle adjustments, support systems, and, in some cases, medication. Early recognition and appropriate intervention can significantly improve quality of life.
Why Assess ADHD?
What the Assessment Includes
1. Pre-Assessment Questionnaires
Gather key information before your appointment to streamline the process.
2. 2.5-Hour Assessment
A detailed, online or face to face appointment to explore the experiences and challenges.
3. Input from Someone Who Knows You Well
Children and Teens (Ages 6–17): We speak and gather information from someone who knows you well, such as a parent, guardian, or caregiver, via phone or Zoom.
Young Adults (Ages 18–25): If childhood input isn't available, we'll speak to someone who knows you well now, such as a partner, family member, or close friend.
4. Computerised Scanning Test
An online computerised ADHD symptoms test to check the levels of activity, inattention and impulsivity. We will also use validated, standardized questionnaires to gather additional insights into behavioural patterns and the impact of symptoms on daily functioning.
5. Comprehensive Assessment Report
A detailed report summarizing your assessment outcomes, which you can share with your GP. If a diagnosis is confirmed, you'll receive a diagnosis confirmation letter to share with employers or educational institutions.
6. Follow-Up Appointment
Discuss your results, and get support to explore therapy and treatment options.
7. Personalised Resources
Access recommendations for reading, podcasts, support organizations, and professionals.
8. Medication Assessment Guidance
Information on how to self-refer for a medication assessment, if needed.
Please note, we are not eligible to prescribe medications.
Cost
The cost of the initial screening interview and assessment of questionnaires is £200. We include this screening separately as we feel it is only fair to proceed with the full assessment should screening indicate it is warranted.
The full cost of assessment, including the written report (stage 3-7 above) is £990. This is payable in full before the diagnostic interview.
Medication
Many people seeking assessment for ADHD are interested in exploring medication. If you meet the criteria for a diagnosis of ADHD we are able to refer you to a partner prescriber who will accept our diagnosis and therefore not require further assessment. We can provide further information about this process and service along with discussion about the potential pros and cons of exploring medication.
